Brand & site, start to finish

Bone Voyage

My own pet-sitting business. Name, brand, painted dogs, words and build — 17 pages, no framework, no CMS.

Overview

Bone Voyage does in-home pet sitting and small-scale boarding in Brisbane. It’s my business, and this is its third name. I did the name, the identity, the illustrations, the copy and the site. Every dog in the photos has actually stayed with me.

Two services, priced differently, for slightly different people: someone who wants their dog left in its own house, and someone who wants it staying in mine. The site has to make that choice obvious straight away.

02

The opportunity

Pet care sites look like pet care sites. Round blue logo, paw prints, a stock photo of a golden retriever in a field, a form that asks you to “enquire for pricing”. Almost all of them compete on being the cheapest.

I’m not the cheapest, so the site had two jobs: look like it costs what it costs, and publish the rates anyway. Hiding prices scares off the people who would’ve paid them.

Creative direction

Version one was a big serif with one italic word per headline. Version two is painted gouache: rounded type, muted earth tones on warm paper, no black outlines, and a paper texture drawn by an SVG filter that weighs a few hundred bytes.

Seven dogs, drawn in SVG and painted in the site’s own colours. A pug kept coming out as a monkey and got cut, and so did a whippet that turned into a llama. The homepage hero is a drawn scene too, because a stock photo would have contradicted a gallery that promises no stock photos, not one.

Colour still does the navigating. Every service has its own, from river blue for in-home care to sage for boarding, six in all.

Process

A small Python generator builds every page from shared components, so the header, footer and schema markup can’t drift apart. The rates live in one file. The price tables, the instant estimator and 513 test answers are all generated from it, and CI fails if the JavaScript estimator and the Python version ever disagree.

The estimator prices real dates: Christmas peak nights, Queensland public holidays worked out by rule through 2032, extra dogs, key trips. Money stays in whole cents end to end, so nothing rounds differently. 582 Jest tests and 112 Playwright tests, with an accessibility pass in light and dark mode.

Outcome

It’s live and taking bookings. Visitors can price their dates before they send anything, and the estimate carries straight into the enquiry form.

The old names stay in the schema markup as alternates, so two renames didn’t cut off the search history built up under them. No traffic or revenue figures here. It’s my own business, and I’d rather show the work than quote myself.
